Victoria School’s 133rd Speech Day

Before we begin our post on Victoria School’s 133rd Speech day, please turn off all handphones and pagers, or turn them to silent mode, we shall begin with events before.

Friday
I helped a little bit with the Angklung board for the RSP item on Friday. It was screwed at first, with pins constantly falling off and it looking, in Ibu Diah’s words, ‘like a school project’. But with her help, it ended up looking like this:

Applause!
So yes, that more or less ended my stint with the board. Although, from where I was, in the support contingent today, the anklung performance was actually quite good (:

Matthew, what are you doing with your hands down there?

Saturday:
I could have looked like this:(Those who know me will know the story.)

For you readers: stop gazing in wonderment!
But instead, I wore my scout uniform. Actually, there’s no real gripes, because it was fun, but kind of sweaty at the same time. Not very pleasant, especially when people around you can smell you.

School was really quite spruced up today, with potted plants dotting the foyer. The veranda*totally wrong usage of word* looked quite nice. They had turkish kebab for the reception too!

The kebab machine
The rehearsal for the prize ceremony took a painfully long time. Seriously. 2 hours of just sitting there. To add insult to injury, I was made to be the ‘model’ to demonstrate the walking path for receiving awards. When Mdm Tang announced ‘Okay I’m going to get a model to demonstrate the walking…path. Francis?’ everyone started sniggering.

The fancy food points.
After that, me and Tristen met up with Yong Jia to collect our food. Oh btw, people are urgh. You’ll find out why in the 2nd paragraph after this. Mrs Sharma and Mdm Farrah were giving out the packets of food for collection, which were meant to be consumed later at 4pm. Naturally, we collected it. BUT DID NOT EAT IT. WE JUST COLLECTED IT. LOL.
So we changed into our scout uniforms at about 1.45, reported to the hall for attendance taking and proceeded to the auditorium. Oh btw, the face zapping thermometer took 5 tries just to get my temperature. Must be malfunctioning.

The hall.
Then in the auditorium, once Mr Tan Wil Beng found out that we had collected the food, he decided that it was something to scold us for and by some magic predilection he chose to give me his best questioning face and tone as to why ‘I’ collected the food packets mentioned above. He acted as if I stole the food -.- Oh, the irony, the drama.
The aforementioned also scolded people for not bringing thermometers. He was like ‘didn’t I put it in my email?’ then Daniel Kong was like ‘no sir you didn’t ‘ He started going, ‘who said?’ until more people joined in the ‘no sir you didn’t’ chorus. He couldn’t take it and changed the subject, saying that it was understood that we should bring our thermometer given the circumstances. Nvm, after all teachers are always right.

The marching part doesn’t really have anything to elaborate upon, so I’ll skip straight to:

School subject prizes for English and History. Bilingual and 1st in standard awards.
Prize presentation ceremony
The whole ceremony was largely uneventful, except the time where I was pulled up by Mdm Tang to receive a prize for a certain Iskandar, who happened to be Malay. Of course, the person giving out the prize was rather surprised that I was going up. Especially since I had just gone up to receive the school subject prizes.

Kop-ed from YJ. LOL.
The principal’s report was largely the de facto pat on one’s back. Then the GOH, Major General Ng’s speech was quite funny at certain points. The entire prize giving process lasted for like erm…an hour?

So yes, the concert segment was so-so, lasted for half an hour. The choir + band’s rendition of ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ was quite good, and the choir was actually audible, unlike previous rehearsals. Must be their new microphones.
The Dikir Barat was seriously funny because Hadi’s voice cracked. HA!
Wushu and Chinese Orchestra had the sort of mild disorder which brings about order. If you know what I’m talking about. The incongruity of certain parts of the melody and the stunts actually brought about cohesion ^^

Freestyle drill looked like erm…ok there was this part where they were stamping their feet in time to the techno music beat and it looked like synchronous dancing.
Indian dance wasn’t really my cup of tea. But looked okay anyway ^^

everyone crowding for the reception.
IMO, the most useful prize I received today must have been the $100 border’s gift card. Yay borders

At the PB room, during the reception, me and Wei Ming:

started making fun of the fake English accents. Matthew started poking me and I said in pidgin :
“Ouch I am being violated do stop poking me it’s downright bloody uncomfortable, what?”

On the whole, speech day was quite a success
